Chic are to release their first album for 23 years in June.
The as-yet-untitled album follows 1992’s Chicism, and is their first since bassist Bernard Edwards died in 1996.
Two of the new album’s songs, I’ll Be There and Back In The Old School, will be released as a single on April 20.
I’ll Be There was inspired by Edwards. Mainman Nile Rodgers said: “1996 may seem like a long time ago, but it feels like yesterday to me – as well as an eternity. The song is called I’ll Be There because, when I found Bernard’s body, I said to him: ‘Now I can be there for you in death, the same way you were there for me in life.’”
Rodgers revealed that new album track Love Somebody Today is built around a recently discovered unreleased demo featuring all the original Chic members. He said: “These recently discovered tapes give me the opportunity to play again with my bandmates who have passed away.”
The album will be released on Land Of The Good Groove, the record label Rodgers has formed with Warner Brothers executive Michael Ostin.
Chic play at London’s Hyde Park on June 21 as part of Barclaycard British Summer Time, also featuring Kylie and Grace Jones.
