Kim Petras - Clarity

Having gender transitioned aged 12, Germany’s Kim Petras perhaps stands out enough already that genuinely distinctive songs aren’t necessary. Certainly Clarity could be by any number of contemporary chart acts, as you might expect with Dr Luke as producer. But alongside the likes of the earnest All I Do Is Cry and cash-flashing Meet The Parents are Do Me’s thrusting future funk, and disco anthem Sweet Spot. Personal Hell, meanwhile, in which she declares herself “sad, but down to fuck”, is unexpectedly, relentlessly cheerful.
