In a statement recently released on their website, Spandau Ballet have announced their first live date in North America in nearly thirty years.

The official announcement on the Spandau Ballet site reads:

“Gary, Martin, Tony, Steve and John will return to the United States to perform for the first time in 28 years this March as part of the 2014 South By Southwest Film and Music Festival at the reopening of the legendary Vulcan Gas Company. You read that correctly: Spandau Ballet are will be playing live in the in North America on March 12th, full show details can be found here.”

This announcement follows news of the world premiere of their documentary Soul Boys of the Western World, also at the 2014 SXSW Film Festival in Austin, TX in competition in the 24 Beats section.

The film was directed by George Hencken and features rare original footage that sheds light on

“There will be a theatrical release in the US of Soul Boys of The Western World.” said Gary.

“We had the idea because we have a good story and the story has a real arc,” says Gary about Soul Boys of The Western World “It’s about friendship, kids who come from the shadows of the second World War growing up in the ‘60s and ‘70s, a period of great rock music from David Bowie and glam rock. They go through the whole punk experience and then had the experience of the whole New Romantic scene of working class kids dressing up and doing things that were outrageous against a recession.”

“Soul Boys of the Western World is a voyage through the 80s in the company of Spandau Ballet, one of the decade’s most iconic bands. This archive-only documentary film tells the story of a group of working-class London lads who created a global music Empire, but at a price none of them imagined. Using the band’s own home movies and showcasing newly discovered material, this film takes us into the heart of the era, and the cultural, political and personal landscape that formed the backdrop to the band’s story. It is a film that speaks not only to fans of the band or those who harbor nostalgia for the 1980s, but also to anyone who has ever experienced friendship and loss.”

The Soul Boys of The Western World SXSW screening is on Wednesday 12th March at 2pm (local time) at The Paramount. Gary, Martin, Steve, John and Tony will attend the event and perform their exclusive live show.
