This glossy Prince track, which takes the No.7 spot in our countdown, earned its own lengthier 12″ release. Little Red Corvette is streamlined brilliance.

6. 1999 (1982)
No.6 in our countdown is 1999. Enjoy those roaring synths: Armageddon never sounded so good!

5. When Doves Cry (1984)
When Doves Cry epitomises everything that is Prince: gated drum machine, cryptic lyrics, layered vocals and mighty guitar. It’s No.5 in our countdown!

4. (1992)
Our No.4 is one of Prince’s most extraordinary creations: 7.

3. Gett Off (1991)
In at No.3 is thunderous hit Gett Off, written for release on Diamonds And Pearls.

2. Purple Rain (1984)
No.2 in our countdown: Purple Rain. This whole album is majestic, but the ever-unsolvable title track is a highlight.
